Clove-Scented Sidecar

FACT 1: I’ve never ridden in a sidecar. I’ve always wanted to.

FACT 2: I’ve never had a sidecar drink. Until now!

What would happen if you drank a sidecar while riding IN a sidecar? I bet it would be a very messy endeavor. It would be classy as all heck though. With some cool goggles, a nice scarf and some leather gloves. Wait!

This is the image I have in my head:

It totally makes sense. Please tell me it makes sense. Maybe I just have whiskey goggles?

Ground cloves & sugar. Just do it. It’s like a cocktail version of these Spiced Orange Popovers.

Substitute booze for dough and you have them. Oh man! Why can’t we just have both?

Here’s that clove sugar I mentioned.

And we’re off!

Bash it. Get all the juice out. The oils in the peel release and you have crazy CITRUS POWER.

Clove Scented Sidecar

makes 2 drinks

(recipe slightly adapted from Sunset Magazine)

  • 6 tablespoons sugar, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 lemon, cut into chunks
  • 1 orange
  • Ice
  • 3/4 cup whiskey
  • 4 whole cloves

Mix 2 tbsp. sugar and ground cloves on a small plate. Rub one lemon chunk around the rims of two cocktail glasses. Turn rims in the clove sugar.

Cut orange into two slices about 1/4 in. thick; cut slices in half. Put lemon chunks, orange slices, and 4 tbsp. sugar in a cocktail shaker. Using a wooden spoon, muddle together the fruit and sugar until fruit is broken up.

Add about 1 cup ice and whiskey to cocktail shaker. With lid securely fastened, shake vigorously to blend, then strain into the sugared glasses. Garnish each with a whole clove.
