COTTAGE CHEESE + APPLESAUCE

COTTAGE CHEESE + APPLESAUCE // shutterbean

I was having a particularly challenging day yesterday so I came home and made applesauce. There’s something so therapeutic about stirring a large pot of stewed apples. Plus my house always smells amazing in the process. For a few days after I make a batch, I can be found eating applesauce from the tupperware container. I like it cold. I usually eat it standing up RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FRIDGE. It’s rare that I put it in a serving bowl. To stretch out the last bit of applesauce, I add it to small curd cottage cheese (or Greek yogurt!) and sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon on top. It feels like dessert and could pass as breakfast.  It’s a favorite of mine when it’s apple season.

Making applesauce is the best experience ever. Smells great in the kitchen wafting out the front door. And the cinnamon, I mean, you feel like you’re making a pie with all those great smells going on –minus the crust which does nothing for me.

Cottage cheese and applesauce is my two year olds favorite afternoon snack. She LOVES it. I am so not a creative person in the kitchen, but was using up these two ingredients in the fridge one day and gave them to my 2-year-old who mushes up all her food anyhow and it was love at first bite!

My grandma used to make huge batches of applesauce each fall and then freeze it in small containers. There is nothing like frozen homemade applesauce…like apple granita. Mixing cottage cheese with applesauce sounds perfect…I normally just mix in chopped apples or grapes, but this sounds even better! Hope you have a great day!

Homemade applesauce, yes – warm, cold, on pancakes, mixed with almonds and cranberries, bring it on. On cottage cheese?! ACK! I like my cottage cheese with mandarin oranges.

No one ever believes me that this is delicious! My mum fed it to me when I was very young and now it’s my go-to comfort food. I don’t crave it often, but when I do, it’s all I eat for days on end.

This has been a favorite snack/dinner of mine forever. And here’s the creepy part. Sometimes slash all times I will mix peas in it too. I think it’s a texture thing. But now I need to go home and make applesauce and stop telling people I add peas into weird things.

    • Tracy

WHOA! Like with applesauce too? Or just peas and cottage cheese? Curious!

      • fusilliamy

Oh yeah, it’s peas mixed with cottage cheese and applesauce. It’s good if you ever need to gross someone out, but I promise it’s good! Or at least not terrible 🙂

Oooh what a fantastic snack! I love cottage cheese with pineapple – I love how the sweetness offsets the tangyness!

I have never heard of this combo before! I shall try it out. I love apple season, and I love to find new ways to eat them.

  • Alycia

Yes to this! When I was a kid, my mom made this as an afternoon snack and called it a cottage cheese sundae. It’s definitely a comfort food, and I even got my fiance on board with this combo. Yum!

    • Tracy

We NEVER had cottage cheese when I was a kid. I think maybe once when my dad was dieting was it in the fridge but NOPE. I bet Cooper wouldn’t even try it. So my point is, you’re lucky you got to try it when you were little!

Growing up, we put apple butter on cottage cheese. It is from the Pennsylvania Dutch who call it schmierkase (after their word for cottage cheese). That way, the apple butter carries all of the spices in it.

    Such an intriguing combination!

  • Liz

Aaahh! Yes to cottage cheese and applesauce! A beloved childhood combination for me, and I still go on a kick every year or two. This reminds me to try feeding it to my little one. Delicious!

  • Jackie

Will try it! I do love cottage cheese with apple butter, yum.
Have you ever tried Judy Rodgers roasted applesauce?? It’s my favorite. I love it cold topped with a drizzle of coconut milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Nothing is more decadent on a chilly fall day than homemade applesauce. I love the taste of apples and cottage cheese.

I second the suggestion to try this with apple butter! I just made a huge batch of apple butter and my whole house smelled like heaven while it was slowly cooking in the oven. I couldn’t stop eating the applesauce I made either and I ate it straight out of the container too!
