Cottage Cheese + Wheat Germ + Honey

Healthy Snack: Cottage Cheese + Wheat Germ + Honey

Cottage cheese creeped me out until Casey introduced me to this combination. It’s something he had when he was growing up. I think his grandpa introduced it to him?  Basically,  you take a good scoop of cottage cheese (I prefer the smaller curds) add a heaping tablespoon (or two) of wheatgerm and  top it off with a little bit of honey. If you’re not into wheatgerm, try ground flaxseed. Also good! It’s creamy, sweet and the wheat germ gives a little bit/depth. If you’re not a lover of cottage cheese, this might change you.

I’ve been meaning to try this combination since you mentioned it probably – 1 or 2 years ago. I’m already a cottage cheese lover, so I’m pretty sure I’d be into it. Thanks for the reminder!

Also, I’m really loving these posts on snack ideas!

  • Caitlin

LOVE cottage cheese and honey! I’ve never tried it with wheat germ. Guess it’s time to change that!

  • cocinaros

Un desayuno espectacular! Me ha entrado hambre solo con ver la foto!

  • jenny

the only way I can eat cottage cheese is with canned pineapple chunks & juice. I know, weird. but it’s really yummy that way!

  • Rose

I love cottage cheese with walnut halves, the kind from TJs, extra big and super fresh. Yum!

  • Annie

Good idea! I have a bunch of wheat germ in my fridge that I need to use up.

  • Libby

I’ve never really been into the cottage cheese/ sweet combo. My personal, most shameful midnight snack is salty, salty potato chips used to scoop small-curd cottage cheese straight out of the tub. I’d say that I could eat the whole thing in one sitting but let’s not kid ourselves–I don’t even make it out of the kitchen. I can eat it all in one standing.
I don’t keep potato chips or cottage cheese in my house, anymore. Needless to say.

    • Tracy

I would have never thought to do that!

Libby, you’ve made me feel better about my cottage cheese addiction! I love dipping Doritos in cottage cheese – so good, but whenever I tell people they think I’m crazy.

When my sister was little the only things she would eat were Annies Mac and Cheese and “apple cheese and wheat germ”, a mix of applesauce, cottage cheese and wheat germ. Definitely sending this to her 🙂

    • Tracy

You’re the second person today who mentioned apple sauce! I’m gonna try it. Thanks!

  • Kelsey

Love this series, Tracy! I like this because I could bring all the ingredients to work and keep them there. I always like knowing where my next snack is coming from when I’m at work. If I don’t have one there’s no way I can focus. Hashtag FOOD MOTIVATED.

Never in a bijillion years would I have thought of this combo!

  • thenik

    What simple brilliance!

  • Eileen

INteresting. I love cottage cheese, but I’ve never had it quite like this! You know what’s really good, though? Cottage cheese mixed with sour cream, chopped radishes, and chives or green onion, spread on rye toast and topped with pepper. AMAZING.

Okay, so I’m not a cottage cheese person but (1) you said small curd, which I think I’d like and (2) I’m addicted to wheat germ. I might have to try this!!

  • Ashley

I make this [gross looking but yummy] combo of cottage cheese, peanut butter, a little honey, mashed banana, and ground flax and wrap it in a tortilla. Totally get how this works and makes me feel a bit less weird for my combo. 🙂 Cottage cheese reallyyyyy varies by brand. It’s kind of crazy. The whole milk kind is usually so.much.better, but this is my very favorite: http://www.kalonasupernatural.com/our-products/cottage-cheese/ I actually prefer the 2% over the 4% with this brand. Once in awhile it’s watery on top but usually it’s absolutely the best! Anyway… haha

    • Tracy

I’ll be on the lookout for that one! I’ve noticed that it’s hard to find small curd in lower fat options (at least where I live). Makes me sad. I like the sound of your combo. How much cottage cheese do you use?

  • Jenny

This is a very interesting combo! I have some wheat germ I need to use up. I’ll see if I can find some small curd cottage cheese at Trader Joes.

  • Elizabeth

I love that you posted this! So unexpected. I happen to love cottage cheese & I’m OK with wheat germ, so may have to try this.

I used to eat something similar – plain (or plain Greek) yogurt with wheat germ and honey – all the time. Never thought to try it with cottage cheese. Cottage cheese and salty tortilla chips, though. Yum.

  • Amanda

I just had this as a snack (I picked up some wheat germ after reading your post) – it was SO tasty! Thanks!

  • Rebecca Eide

    yummy! that sounds so good.

  • Melanie

I had this for lunch and it was YUMMY!

  • TheBBRcast

    I need to try it! : ))

  • Kim

I’m down with the cottage cheese & honey combo. Maybe my 20 month old will eat it this way. So far I’ve only seen his upturned nose at the sight of cottage cheese.

  • Erin

Mmm – thanks for the idea! Love cottage cheese with fruit or veggies – never tried the honey wheat germ thing. Sounds good!

  • Robin O.

A little late to this party, but saved this post because I wanted to try this combo. Just finished my first bowl! I used ground flaxseed and this was so good!!!! I have never heard of, or had cottage cheese with honey before. In my family it was always served with canned peaches or pineapple. When I became an adult I loved eating cottage cheese with salsa or hot sauce, cubed avocado, and lots of salt and cracked pepper. Thanks for expanding my food horizons Tracy!
