I’m writing this on the floor of my bedroom right now. I threw out my back. I want to eat a sleeve of Oreos only because I went down some rabbit hole on buzzfeed where someone jammed a fork in the creamy filling of an Oreo and dunked it into a glass of milk. Now I want to eat all the Oreos. Also, that’s a pretty awesome technique.

As I write this on my floor of my bedroom with back pain, I’m on day 22 of the Whole30. Someone told me that they were super sick of eggs by this point. Fortunately I figured out how to make this apple “oatmeal” on day 5 and I’ve been alternating it into my meal prep for the weeks. I haven’t had enough eggs to be sick of them yet. WAHOOOO.

Not only is this Whole30 compliant, but it’s vegan and gluten free with no added sugar. It tastes like a cross between apple sauce and oatmeal. The soaked cashews in the mix give it that same bite you get with oatmeal and it’s nice and thick to boot!  It’s great served cold as a snack in the afternoon, but I like warm with bananas, raisins and nuts. I think tomorrow I might stir in a scoop of almond butter and coconut flakes.

Let’s gather our ingredients:

Processed with Snapseed.

Cut the apples!

This “oatmeal” needs to be textured! That’s why we’re adding soaked cashews.

You can see little bits of raisins in there, huh?

You could also use dates. I’d probably use 2-3 to the mix.

Process! You can make it smoother if you’d like. I like it this textured:

Grain Free Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal

makes 4-5 servings

  • 7 apples cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice
  • 1/2 vanilla bean pod, seeds scraped
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup cashews soaked overnight, drained

In a large pot combine apples, raisins, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla bean, and salt. Pour in 1 1/2 cups water and cooking, stirring occasionally for 20-25 minutes, until apples and raisins are soft.

Allow to cool, then blend apples until desired consistency with a food processor or immersion blender. Add soaked cashews to the mixture and pulse a few times to keep mixture chunky. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

  • Amanda

This sounds yummy. I haven’t done a Whole30 but I’m certainly intrigued and will definitely try this recipe. Another breakfast I like is Peanut Butter Runner’s mashed sweet potato/banana bowls…yum! Warm and full of goodness (also Whole30 compliant).

  • Michelle

Congratulations on making it to day 22!. When I did Whole 30 breakfast was definitely the most challenging part for me. Oatmeal is my favorite and I missed it terribly. Thinking I’ll do another round soon and will definitely give this a try. When I saw this on our instagram yesterday I was hoping you’d post the recipe, so thank you. Also, I’m so sorry to hear about your back. I hope you feel better soon!

  • Jamie

Awesome idea but do you think this would work with almonds? Cashews make my face break out. (sad face emoji big time!)

  • Jamie

Oh, and “Monkey Salad” for breakfast for some variety. Most people use bananas but I prefer apples – dice up that apple, top with some almond butter, toasted unsweetened coconut, and pepitas for a little extra protein. I also like to add cocao nibs for a chocolatey crunch. And sometimes a few strawberries. = )

  • danielle

Sorry girl, but this is totally SWYPO and not actually Whole 30. I still say you do you though. Not trying to be a hater.

    • Tracy

i guess it’s considered SWYPO cuz i used raisins?
or is because i made “oatmeal”?

      http://whole30.com/2011/10/sex-with-your-pants-on/

i’m reading that…and I interpret it as do not eat foods that are technically whole30 but trigger you into bad habits.

For me, I’m not a person who goes CRAZY for oatmeal/sweets to begin with, so I don’t think that it’s something that triggers me into making poor choices throughout the day. I suppose I could eat everything independently and it’s not considered sex with your pants on?

I feel pretty good about what I am doing. There were a few days where I went OVERBOARD on plantain chips and salami…which I believe is waaaaaaaaaaay worse for me than eating a combination of cooked apples, nuts, raisins and bananas. For me, SWYPO is more of a savory snack problem…and I am really trying hard to manage that.

This process has been more about figuring out how to slow down my brain and make better choices for me. This feels oatmeal feels like one.

      • Hillary

I’ve done whole30 a few times, and I always considered SWYPO to be about making junk food technically compliant or foods that, for you, are connected to cravings or are “not psychologically healthy.” Those foods will be different for different people–as the article in the link you posted said, “context matters.” Intent matters, too, which is why the creators say in regards to the SWYPO dilemma: “Now, does this mean you can’t substitute a poor food choice with a healthier option? Of course not. To help you critically evaluate whether you’re attempting to engage in SWYPO, ask yourself this question. Am I trying to exactly duplicate or recreate the poor food choice with ‘approved’ ingredients, or am I merely looking for a healthier, more nutritious substitution for that food?”

In this case, I doubt you have any psychological connections to oatmeal (unlike what someone might have with fried food, sweets, savory snacks, etc.). It’s merely a healthier version of what is already, arguably, still a pretty healthy choice. So many whole30 recipes are healthier versions of things–I follow the Instagram pages and you see compliant versions of ranch dressing, fried chicken, fried rice, etc. In my mind, how is this paleo oatmeal any different than cauliflower rice?

In short, I think you’re good Tracy 🙂 Keep it up–you’re almost there! I’m planning on doing another whole30 in January and I’m bookmarking this for future reference.

        • Olivia

I said I was going to make this and my husband tried to call me out on SWYPO too… he said, “Aren’t you RECREATING something here?” and my response was, “Babe, I don’t have an OATMEAL problem…. that’s for junk food”. I think you’re good too! Can’t wait to try this with the pile of apples I have on the counter. Thanks!

        • libby

Would it still be SWYPO if you just called it something else?? Porridge?

          • JJ

Love it Libby! Porridge does NOT sound like anything that would flip someone’s switch! I am considering Whole30 because my joints have started to ache (among other known issues). I haven’t done much research and just know the basics. But man, this kind of talk makes it seem like all those diets with rule debates I’ve avoided my entire adult life. My mom is/was a hard core fad diet, hope it makes me a skinny, beautiful, different version of myself. I’ve always tried to avoid that kind of stuff because it is so complicating. I’ve tried to go the make good choices and not over-do route but I know from having other food sensitivities that cutting certain things out can make a difference. I was hoping not to encounter this kind of implications in something like whole30. I realize there are rules but I get itchy when there are too many complications. Maybe if I don’t go in to deep? Thanks so much Tracy for sharing your experience with us!

          • Tracy

I think that you have to find what works best for you and stick to it. I learned a lot about myself through this process. To me, it was about managing my relationship with food and being present with it. For some people, they do it because they have an intense battle with sugar. Definitely not my case as I’m not a sweets person. It’s not a one size fits all situation, that’s for sure!

    • Audria

I wouldn’t say it’s SWYPO so much as it doesn’t really comply with the Whole30 template. Each Whole30 meal should have protein, veggies, and fat. So while this might wotk for a snack on your Whole30 and that’s you, I wouldn’t replace a meal like breakfast with it. My opinion anyways….

  • jake

How long do you think this would last in the fridge for re-heatings?

  • Shannan

Looks great – I’m going to try this!

  • Monica B.

This looks so delicious! I love oatmeal on cold days, but I’m finding I cannot eat it has often (too rich, too thick, too heavy) – this is a great replacement. Congratulations on day 22! Hope you’re feeling better.

    • Tracy

Yes! If you think oatmeal is too rich/thick and heavy, you’ll definitely like this version. I am feeling better. Thank you!

  • Jenn

I was very excited when you revealed your Day 15 on Whole30, which was the first time I had heard you were doing this. So, I ordered the book and I start Day 1 on Monday. Up until now I wasn’t sure this was for me, but you have done this with grace! Hope your back heals quickly.

  • Jessica

Just made this. My apartment smells amazing!

  • Kelsey

If I don’t have time to soak the cashews overnight, will it still turn out?

  • Carrie

This quickly became a favorite of mine. I am currently on Day 11 of my own Whole30 and I love eating this on top of a sweet potato. Yum.

    • Susan B

Oh my goodness Carrie (and Tracy)! My husband’s starting W30 middle of February 2018, he does not care for plain sweet potatoes (always needs marshmallow and such on them)… I think you may have just made that doable for him!!

  • Jess

I made this yesterday with pecans/apricots instead of cashews/raisins because I was all out, and it turned out great. I had it for breakfast this morning with bananas and coconut, so good! I’m on Day 15 and I was really getting sick of eggs every morning, so thank you for this!

  • Leslie

If I sub pecans, do you suggest soaking them overnight as well or just cooking them with the apples?

    • Tracy

I would probably not soak them overnight because I like the crunch of the pecans, but it’s entirely up to you!

  • Marcella

    Are the raisins a must?

  • becky

Hi. Im on day 3 and still figuring out meal planning. How does this fit in? Aren’t we supposed to have a protein, fat and vegetable in every meal??? Thanks for your input.

  • Liz

Do you think this would freeze well?

  • Tahra Makinson-Sanders

So wondering about the sugar. this comes to 41 grams of sugar per serving. and 151 grams of carbs. That seems really high. The good fat is great at 26 grams.

    • Audria

In the co text of Whole30, we don’t count macronutrients. That’s not of concern. When you eat a diet appropriately balanced with proteins, veggies, fruits, and healthy fats…you naturally consume healthy amounts of sugar, carbs, and fat. how high those amounts are in a specific meal is irrelevant.

  • Melissa

What kind of apples do you use?

  • Josh

This smells very good when you are making it but for the time and effort you put in, it is not at all satisfying. I would have liked it better if it was advertised as what it is and not oatmeal. It tasted nothing like oatmeal. Not bad, just not what I thought I “bought”.

    • Tracy

I am sorry this didn’t meet your expectations. I figured that with all of the photos and descriptions you would understand what you’re in for.

  • Janis

Quick question – are we using raw cashews? On day 8 and soooo tired of eggs, but feeling amazing! I have an inflammatory disease, so Whole30 is exactly what I needed. Finding an optional, creative, COMPLIANT breakfast food is perfect right ’bout now!

  • Deborah

When you say soak, are you soaking them in water or coconut milk?

  • Rebeca

I finally gave it a try today and the three of us loved it! I don’t like raisins and didn’t have any dates on hand, so I just made it without. It was sweet enough with the apples I used. The wonderful smell was a bonus.

  • Amanda

This looks soooo yummy, I don’t have an immersion blender – do you think I could blend it in a regular blender? Can’t wait to try!

    • Tracy

of course! i just use the immersion blender because i can’t be trusted transferring liquids into my blender (i make a mess!)

      • Amanda

Hahaha perfect! I wonder if almonds would work instead of cashews?

        • Tracy

cashews tend to be a bit creamier and don’t have the skins like almonds, but i would use what you’ve got! i don’t think it would make that big of a difference.

  • Lise @momlovesbaking

Is it a total of 3 cups of water to boil the apples? Recipe says combine apples, etc, water and salt. Then says pour in 1 1/2 cups water. Just checking. Thanks!

  • Joy Young

I’m preparing to start Whole30 soon. Breakfast and snacks on-the-run are going to be my biggest challenge. Thanks for this and the other creative compliant foods that will help me succeed and enjoy it at the same time.

  • Kaisa Svennberg

    Hi!
Thanks for the inspiration. I’m allergic to nuts and almonds so I made an alteration by excluding the cashewnuts and adding diced potatoes instead. It turned out super nice!

  • Adina

    Hi. Can this be frozen?

  • Helen

I just made this porridge it was amazing. great alternative breakfast ? I am on day 15 and I’ve lost 8 pounds, my blood pressure is down and my blood sugar is down. I’m loving the results.!!

  • Felicity

Do you think it would work without the raisins? I detest raisins 🙁

    • Amanda

I’m not the poster, but I made it this morning and I think so. You could try using dates to sweeten it if you thought you needed it, but honestly I think it would be sweet and flavorful enough without.

    • Tracy

      dates would work! yes!

  • Janice Stenglein

This looks amazing. I am on Day 2 of a vegetarian whole 30. It’s tough. I’m already sick of eggs lol.

  • Tammy

I am allergic to oats and I definitely will be trying this recipe. Thanks

  • Amanda

I made the “oatmeal” this morning and it is divine! This recipe is so forgiving as well (I did a few things wrong in my sleep deprived haze haha). I paired it with homemade breakfast sausage and the sweet and savory really complimented each other. This would also be great poured over a sweet potato or sweet potato cubes added to it. On to day 20!

  • Julie

I made this tonight for tomorrow morning’s breakfast (this is my second round of whole30, and while I don’t detest eggs or avocados…yet…I wanted an easy to eat at my desk alternative). Just wondering the best way to reheat it? Thanks in advance!

  • Elle

I think I may have either used the wrong apples or cooked the apples too long. Mine turned out to be apple sauce!! It was still good, but wondering if there is a better apple that I could have used (I used Rome and Macouns) so that it has a thicker consistency. (I also ended up putting a scoop of almond butter in it to thicken it – not bad).

  • Emily

I’ve made this twice now and it’s delicious! Thank you!
One question: Can you freeze it/ save it for later?

  • Carly

This is super SWYPO – it is a recreation and it uses dates/raisins to sweeten

  • Doodbro

Definitely SWYPO, not good for Paleo instead of Whole30.

  • Doodbro

“But good for Paleo” that should have said.

  • Michele Woodburn

I just made this. Definitely not SWYPO. To me it doesn’t taste like oatmeal, I usually do steel cut, but a nice switch up to my breakfast routine. I usually make applesauce so adding the nuts will up the protein.
    Thanks for the recipe

  • Katie Reginaldi

I’m late to this party, but my husband and I are preparing to start our 30 days on Monday, and I already know I’ll be sick of eggs pretty quickly. Has anyone tried this with berries instead? I’m reading these comments, and pecans with blueberries, strawberries or raspberries (not dried) sounds like it might be a tasty variation.
