I went FULLY gray at age 53. I could have gone gray WAY sooner, only when my mother was alive she thought I might look older than my husband. Well let me tell you, growing out my hay, NO ONE NOTICED and each and every day I get complements about how gorgeous my hair is. I wear makeup every day, I have a THICK head of hair and I’m NOT at ALL sorry I did it! It was so freeing! Plus I do water aerobics 4x a week and the chlorine would have done a number on that FAKE YELLOW I used to get slopped on my head! HAHA! No really!

Airlines use hose water pumped into the side of the plane. When I was a flight attendant, the maintenance crew would routinely accidentally stick the fuel hose in there as they were very similar looking. They would clean it out, but the water would still have a very distinct ‘jet fuel’ aroma to it for a few more fill-ups.

The Buzzfeed link (with the grey hair photos) is great. I started to go grey at about 18 (like my mother) and haven’t bothered to use hair dye (too lazy). I’m 30 in January and it’s not taken over quite yet. I’ve given up hoping I’ll just get a grey streak down one side like Rogue in X Men :D.

  • Susan

I’m 53. My hair has never seen any dye. At the time that I might have thought about starting to dye my hair, I came across three different women in salons who had dyed hair that was thinning. Not sure the dye had anything to do with it, but I wasn’t taking chances. I also hate hate hate when people’s roots show. Plus I’m cheap. I’d rather spend that money on something else than hair dye that will have to be redone constantly.

So I have naturally gone gray over time. I have had numerous times where people have asked me who highlights my hair. I tell them it was my kids during their teen years as a joke. (My kids were actually amazingly easy teenagers.) The way my gray has come in has been in streaks that do look like highlights. Add in that I actually have one streak that is a birthmark that I have had since a baby. (Yes I was a baby with one little spot of gray hair on my head.)

So gray short bob (longer in front, cut on an angle) with streaks of gray throughout. And I like it. I’ve earned every one. And my hair is amazingly healthy.

I’m in my late 40’s and although I don’t have any grey, my red hair is fading. The next decade will be interesting.

    • Tracy

Wow! That’s interesting! Is your red hair one of your more notable features? Is it turning a lighter shade of red? Like a strawberry blonde?

I figure that if I go fully grey when I get older, I’ll put a few fun color streaks in there.

      • Jenn

Yep, it is definitely my most notable feature. When I was younger it was a richer auburn and now the best way I can describe it is that the color is being diluted. Maybe light peach is my final destination? And I completely agree, adding a few fun streaks sounds great!

I started coloring my hair when I was 18. I stopped coloring it last year when I turned 43. I was sick and tired of the maintenance. I already had a pixie cut, so I had my husband buzz my hair off super short. It has now been over a year since I stopped coloring my hair. It turned out to be a lovely shade of silver and black. I get lots of compliments on it and many people think it is colored this way. Lol

Re: #6. I just ordered a necklace for my sister-in-law from ShopRareBird. Thank you for the suggestion!

Most millennials I know (including myself) would never go out to eat on a holiday, because we all graduated from college mid-recession and worked in restaurants to make ends meet.We know how much it sucks to work when everyone else is off.
