Whole 30 Snack Ideas (30 of them!)

I’m a snacker. Always have been. Always will be.

Instead of reaching into the carby snack drawer at 3pm or 10am, I reworked my routine and learn how to make better choices.

Here’s a list for you- Whole 30 Snack Ideas! I came up with THIRTY OF THEM!

These are some of the things I ate instead of CHIPS, CRACKERS, CHEESE.

1. Apples + Lime

One of my favorite snacks of all time. Lime juice makes apple slices taste AMAZING and it also protects the apples from browning.

2. Plantain Chips + Salsa

I read a post that said plantain chips from Trader Joe’s are whole30 compliant. I immediately went out and bought some. They’re strangely good. The trick is to not eat too many of them.

3. Plantain Chips + Guacamole

Especially difficult when guacamole is involved! This is a great option if you have to bring yourself a snack for a party.

4. Mixed Nuts + Salami

A winning combination. Really good for the afternoon slump when you need a bit of protein to power through. You have to make sure you find compliant salami.

5. Frozen Peaches

I have become obsessed with frozen peaches. I will eat a whole bowl of them at night for dessert or in the afternoon when I need a pick me up. It’s impossible to eat them very fast and I like that the coldness slows me down.

6. Banana Apple Almond Butter Bowl

This is one of my favorite combinations right now. It’s now become one of my go-to breakfasts. I cut up bananas and apples and drizzle almond butter on top. I finish with a sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes. The textures are really good together.  I love it.

7. Apples + Cinnamon

Another winning combo if your sweet tooth is ACTIVATED.

The cinnamon brings the sweetness out in the apple.

8. Avocado Sushi Bites

Seaweed with avocado, carrots and sesame seeds with hot sauce. Sriracha has sugar in it 🙁  So you could use wasabi for some kick.

Really good if you’re craving sushi. Add some fish or cucumber!

9. Ants on a Log

You can have any nut butter that’s not peanut butter on Whole30. Here I made the classic ants on a log with celery, almond butter & raisins. Hello, childhood snack.

10. Salt & Vinegar Potato Salad

It’s awesome that you can have potatoes on whole30.

Here’s my salt & vinegar potato salad. I add herbs to make it even more flavorful.

11. Broccolini Salad

If you ever have any leftover vegetables, eat them as a salad. Here I tossed broccolini with red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt & pepper. If you let it sit overnight the vegetables will soak up the vinegar. It’s sooooo good. I also do this with green beans and regular broccoli.

12. Sweet Potato Banana Bowl

This is another great breakfast option. Take a baked potato and fill it with sliced bananas, almond butter and finish with cinnamon. I’d throw in some coconut if I was you.

13. Prosciutto + Fruit

Nuff said. I like prosciutto with apples more than cantaloupe. Sometimes I mix a bite with dried apricots and almonds.

Sounds weird but it’s actually good.

15. Apple Cinnamon “Oatmeal”

Here’s the recipe. It’s so good for breakfast or cold as an afternoon snack. I made this twice during my whole30. Loved it.

16. DIY Trail mix

We now keep a giant jar of trail mix on the container. It’s a a great way for me to grab a quick snack on the go.  I have a handful of trail mix and a banana for breakfast when I’m too busy to sit down.

17. Seasonal Fruit Salad

Persimmons are in season right now. Same with pomegranate! Throw in some green grapes (another favorite snack) and make a quick fruit salad. Give it a squeeze of lemon or lime. Enjoy.

18. Coconut Date Rolls

I keep these in the freezer in those break in case of emergency moments when I need something sweet. When you keep them in the freezer the texture changes…they’re harder and chewier and I like that in a snack. Here’s the recipe.

19. Bananas Coconut Cream + Coconut

You can make coconut cream so easily. Unfortunately you can’t use sugar or agave on the whole30. BUT!  It’s not really that missed when you make it on its own and serve it with fruit.

20. Mango with Chili Powder + Lime

Mmmmm. Try not to think about margaritas as you eat this.

21. Blistered Shishito Peppers

Throw some of these peppers in a skillet with olive oil, salt & pepper. I could eat at least a pound of them!

22. Sweet Potato Coconut Butter + Curry

Another good way to enjoy a sweet potato. Stir in some coconut butter and a little bit of curry powder. Season with salt. YUM.

You could also omit the curry powder and make it sweet with cinnamon.

23. Hardboiled Eggs + Bacon Bits

I totally forgot about hard-boiled eggs this round of Whole30. Next time I am going to add more to salads. Especially with bacon bits.

24. Turkey Lettuce Sandwiches

For those times when you really miss sandwiches…Use a lettuce wrap! I actually really enjoyed eating turkey on lettuce with mustard and dill sauerkraut. Sounds weird but it was goooood.

25. Walnut Stuffed Figs

Sweet/savory/nutty/portable

26. Berries + Coconut Milk

Mix berries with coconut milk! You can do this with frozen berries too. It’s really good. And if you’re not into coconut milk, use almond milk.

27. Larabar

For those times when you’re out & about and you forgot to pack a snack, grab a bar. My current favorite is the pumpkin pie larabar. 

It’s really good with a cup of my favorite tea.

28. Quick Pickled Cucumber Salad

Take a little apple cider vinegar and toss it with cucumber slices. Season with toasted sesame seeds and sesame oil and you have a quick pickled cucumber salad. I normally use rice wine vinegar for this but I am not sure it’s compliant.

29. Cucumber Cantaloupe Salad

Another refreshing snack that will make you feel good when you finish that last bite. Cut up cucumber is mixed with cantaloupe, chopped mint and finished with a squeeze of lime.

30. Dried Fruit

I love the dried peaches & apples at Trader Joe’s. I love to end a meal with a few pieces. It’s like having a fruit roll-up.

There you have it. 30 snacks. They’re all pretty healthy too. You definitely don’t have to be on the Whole30 to enjoy them!

    not having cream in my coffee and I might be ready to do

      Hi Lauren! So hopefully this will help you. During my first Whole30 the absolute hardest thing to give up was my half and half in my coffee. I put it off for months because of it. I eventually just drank black coffee for 30 days. *shudder* Then one of my friends suggest I try using canned coconut milk. Canned coconut milk is fattier (so more flavorful and more of the mouth feel of cream) than the carton coconut milks or almond milks. I’ve tried a few brands and I recommend the Thai Kitchen Full Fat coconut milk. To me it has the best flavor and consistency and it is Whole30 compliant.

      It does take a little getting used to but I drink it all the time in my coffee now and I think its great. Maybe try steaming it at first to get used to the difference in flavor/texture? Another note, when you add it to your coffee be aware it does not change the coffee color the same way as half and half so go off taste not coffee color. I learned that the hard way lol. Make sure you shake up the can really well too before using it as coconut milk tends to separate a little bit. I hope this helps! After the Whole30 if you’re looking for a good non dairy creamer I highly recommend Better Half creamer by Califia Farms. Unfortunately its not Whole30 but it is delicious. Its coconut cream and almond milk. Normally I do not like almond milk in my coffee but this blend is wonderful. Good luck!!!!

        Thanks for the tips, Jessica! Lauren, I’ve been using coconut cream/almond milk in my coffee and I’m still doing it. The hardest part for me was not having my coffee sweetened, but now I am used to it. I never EVER thought I could go without sugar in my coffee and there were a few times I drank it black! So who knows? Maybe your tastebuds will change a bit.

          Thanks guys! I already drink my coffee without sugar, so not a huge adjustment there
          (hopefully) but these are great suggestions. I was concerned about drinking
          black coffee because I thought it would trigger my reflux, but I am sure this could help!

            Use cane sugar, brown sugar, agave, honey or 100% maple syrup. As long as its not refined sugar. It makes a big difference with your health and waistline

          Hi Tracy, when I started drinking my coffee black, for the first few days it tasted so different and strong I didn’t much like it but after a few days I got used to the tase and every time I would have it I would think of that taste means healthy and good for me and it started to taste great and I got used to it using that mind set. Ilove it now.

            Yes! I started drinking mine black and went on a good streak with that…until I started adding almond milk. I drink it black when there’s no almond milk around. I’m so glad I got used to it.

    These ideas are great! I’m in my third round of Whole30 and have learned for me, I need to eliminate snacking as much as I can.       I’m also interested in knowing more details about the compliant salami. Applegate has sugar. Unless maybe you got it from the deli counter and the ingredients are different? Which is the case with their turkey buying it prepackaged vs from the deli. Please be specific. Thanks!! 🙂

    Unfortunately, the sushi bites are not Whole30. I know I’m being picky, but, alas, Sirachia has added sugar. I wish it didn’t!

    Unfortunately, there is no snacking allowed during the Whole30, so there’s no such thing as a Whole30 snack. If you are breast feeding or an extreme athlete, you can have mini meals that must follow the Whole30 template.

      Sometimes snacks turn into dinners because we don’t always have the time to make a giant meal. That’s my intention.

        Also, in addition to being a breastfeeding mama, my blood sugar issues require eating every three-ish hours. I think the creators of this system would be just as pleased to know that the spirit of the book is being honored when people make hard decisions in order to re-evaluate their relationship with food and learn to control their cravings, and both practices look different for each individual. I’m super grateful for these ideas, as I’m on day 1.

      I just started the Whole 30 this week, found this post and was reading the comments and thought I might copy-paste some clarity for anyone else who comes across this. No snacking during the program is a recommendation, not a rule. Because real life happens/people are different.

      From the site:

      As we explain in detail in It Starts With Food, eating three meals each day with minimal snacking (except pre- and post-workout meals) helps to keep your hormones in a healthy rhythm and teaches you to focus on eating mindfully. However, it’s really okay if you find you have to eat between meals. For folks who are used to eating six small meals, it might take some time to get used to eating just three big ones. For those who work really long days, you might find that four meals or three meals and a snack are in order. For kids and pregnant/nursing mothers, this recommendation goes right out the window; snack away (just make sure you’re leaving about 3 hours between eating sessions, and not grazing all day). Sometimes, for no apparent reason, you just need a little something to get you through, and that’s okay too. The success of your Whole30 likely isn’t riding on whether or not you have a mini-meal a few afternoons.

        I should probably change the title to Snack Meals, as I am a person (read above) who loves snacks…and ends up making entire meals out of them. The challenge with doing a Whole30 (for me at least) is that some of the meals I ate (that were heavy on the meat) left me feeling so full throughout the day that I didn’t really need a big dinner or a big lunch (if I had a big breakfast). So I would make a meal out of a snack. Also, not many people have time to make a whole sit down dinner, so I thought this would be helpful.

      i used the whole30 website as a resource:

      “Applegate Farms is one commonly available brand of deli meats, and some of their pre-packaged meat (like their Turkey Bologna or Roast Beef) are Whole30 compliant. Other kinds, like their Oven-Roasted Turkey, are only compliant if you order them sliced at the deli counter, as the pre-packaged version contains carrageenan. We’ve also found compliant deli turkey at our local Target Superstore.”

    Nice snack ideas, beautifully presented.

    I should point out that those date rolls are sex with your pants on, especially if you put them in the freezer. The idea is to stop feeding the sugar dragon, you shouldn’t “need something sweet”.

    THANK YOU for that banana, apple, almond butter bowl idea!! Eggs for breakfast aren’t really my jam, so when I was meal-planning for the first week of my Whole 30 I put this on my agenda. I ate it for 25/30 of my Whole 30 breakfasts, and now that I’m two weeks out of Whole 30 it’s still my weekday go-to – I love it that much. I got a ton of inspiration from your meal lists, but this one was a serious lifesaver and game-changer.

    Love this list! Just wanted to let you know that Plantain Chips are no longer Whole30 compliant. As of April 1 all store bought chips are a no-go. The rest of the list looks awesome though! Thank you for the ideas:)

    Love these ideas! My go-to snack is Whole30 compliant bacon cut into squares with homemade guacamole. Oh my goodness! So so delicious. And no sugars from fruit which can be bad for those who are diabetic. I usually have them with deviled eggs that I’ve made using compliant mayo and mustard with a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar and salt/pepper. Thanks again for these ideas!

      Another great snack is to cut a cucumber length wise and use a spoon to scoop the seeds out. Then fill the scooped area up with chicken salad made with compliant mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, grapes etc. I usually then slice each long “boat” into several shorter ones for easy eating. Enjoy!

    Hi Tracy, thank you so much for such wonderful tips and ideas for snacking. I think that the book lacks in indicating what snacking options are whole30 complaint, and this is definitely a good guide. However, when reading the official guide to the program, plantain chips that are packaged are not allowed. I was so happy to read that fried plantains may have made the cut but sadly they are off the program. Also, I read on this same list that rice vinegar is compliant so the cucumber snack is 100% approved (https://whole30.com/2013/06/the-official-can-i-have-guide-to-the-whole30/) Thanks for sharing, and I’m definitely giving these suggestions a try.     This is a great list of healthy snacks, and many of them are W30 compliant, but one of the firm rules if you are needing a snack is that it needs to have a protein or a fat (and ideally both). So apples with lime juice and those delicious frozen peaches aren’t a compliant snack all by themselves. Maybe you can add some protein or fat to the ones that don’t have any? I know it would be helpful to the folks just getting started on W30.

    Thank goodness for freethinkers! I went in search of snack hacks and these all look delicious! I can’t wait to add them to my repertoire.

    As someone who has maintained a 65 pound weight loss for well over a decade, I can assure anyone who is fearful of eating healthy snacks. Eating too much fruit in between healthy whole food meals isn’t what leads anyone to the scale or the doctor’s office. RELAX, people. It’s a book — not THE book. LOL!

      I definitely agree, Kari. My husband and I have lost 46 and 21 pounds over 12 weeks on the Whole30. We’ve decided to make it a way of eating for life. Both of us do better without added sugars, dairy and grains. We occasionally consume alcohol and are upping our skills at eating out (after asking LOTS of questions).

    Seems to me if you start reintroducing all your bad foods then you’ll be back where you started. I’m doing the whole30, I’m on day 8. My plan is to make this my lifestyle. Every blue moon i May splurge, but I’m basically going to eat whole30 forever. If i play with beer or wine I’ll be back overdrinking it. So it will have to be a special occasion then back to whole30. Is this how most of you are doing it after the 30 days? I need to lose weight so, did any of you lose weight?

    Thank you for these great ideas, and so easy and simple. Just finished my first whole/30. After the first week I realized and focused On not what I was eating but what I wasn’t eating and how quickly and easily I turned my unhealthy eating around. I know people get super picky about not snacking. To me snacking is a box of cookies, triple chocolate ice cream and bags of chips. Some of your snacks I will incorporate as my meals because I cannot do the three meal a day program. It just doesn’t work with my busy schedule. I be told myself if I stay within the whole 30 food compliment list I’m in the program and am eating so much healthier. I feel healthier, have more energy , and have lost weight. Thanks again for your great food ideas, it will make my next round much more exciting and motivating!!

    Hi,
    These are all great ideas. I’ve been roasting sweet potato slices in the oven and then smashing avocado on top with a poached egg. My idea of avocado toast and it’s Whole30 compliant!

    Hi,
    I looked over your list of snacks on your website and they were very inspiring. However, I do questions some of them. Mangos and raisins for instance are very high in surgar. In the Whole30 Book it states no dried fruit of any kind. Also I question the Figs. Also dried and high in sugar. LaraBars are a big no no.

    I’m on Day 1 and i am starving! It is 3pm, so I ate a bowl of watermelon. Now my stomach is growling. I am trying to sleep it off.

    Eat more protein! You are starving because you need protein. Also, to the creator of this page– thanks for the list! However, I thought deli meat was off limits for Whole 30 due to its processed character. Plantains are also off the list now. ;(

    My new favorite snack is a banana dipped in a small bowl of seeds. I keep in the refrigerator a jar of equal amounts of chia, flax, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin seeds and add unsweetened shredded coconut to it.

    I definitely agree, Kari. My husband and I have lost 46 and 21 pounds over 12 weeks on the Whole30. We’ve decided to make it a way of eating for life. Both of us do better without added sugars, dairy and grains. We occasionally consume alcohol and are upping our skills at eating out (after asking LOTS of questions).

    I just love your snack list… I know this is going to sound so rude, and it’s not meant to be, but I am about, I think, to try this Whole30 thing and I want to be sure that I am doing it correctly. Have all these snacks been Whole30 approved? I’m so paranoid I’m going to mess up!!

    I just tarts whole 30 and I bought coconut creamer – I thought I was buying get coconut cream. I realize now I was wrong. But is coconut creamer Whole 30 copliatnt ? The ingredients sounded fine. Help

    You’ve probably found out by now but “Rice Wine Vinegar” is Whole30 compliant.

    This answer may be too late but…
    Not all on this list are whole 30 compliant based on current “rules and recommendations”. Store bought plantain chips are a no go. Too much fruit is a bad idea and fruit by itself for a snack is not suggested but rather fruit with a protein or fat. A good practice for me has been to search the “can I have” post on the whole 30 blog (or just google your question). Always check the ingredient list 🙂

    I’m told that plantain “chips” are only compliant if you make them yourself and if you do NOT deep fry them. So only baked plantains are part of whole30 now.
