The thing about gardening…

I have a small vegetable garden in our backyard and I've been reluctant to post pictures of it because I've been somewhat neglecting it this summer! The thing about gardening is that you need to tend to your plants everyday. You gotta prune, inspect, manage bugs, fertilize and WATER your plants or else everything falls apart. Some days I remember that I need to water my plants when I'm deep in spreadsheet-land at work. I rush home to wilted plants who really don't appreciate night time waterings. Two or three days of neglect and my tomatoes are looking a little droopy with a few extra yellow leaves hanging around. Fortunately there's still a lot of fruit coming off the vines and things are ripening up nicely. Fall is going to be here before I know it so I'm savoring every last bit of tomato goodness while I can! Here's what I've got going on...
#29. Grow some lettuce!
Working on another item from my 31 comes before 32 list! #29. GROW SOME LETTUCE!
So here's what I've got growing in our galvanized steel trough! Herbs & lettuce! I already know I'm going to add some basil to the mix. I'm thinking of ripping out the parsley because it's not doing well since I transported it. Still trying to figure out if I'm going to grown some tomatoes this year.....hmm.

lessons in gardening…
The other morning Cooper & I were hanging out in the backyard and he kept running up to me saying "Green ones, green ones!" I assumed he was referring to his trucks so I brought them out for him to play with. My assumption was wrong. A few minutes later he turns the corner, runs back to me with a proud look on his face and yells, "GREEN ONES GREEN ONES!" It was then that I realized he was talking about my GREEN TOMATOES waiting patiently to ripen on the vine. Little bubbs then says "Grapes! grapes! grapes!" He proceeds to smoosh them in his hands and then runs away. Whoa. I was stunned. Goodbye green tomatoes. I worked hard all summer for you....I now see why my grandparents were super pissed when my brothers and I would pick off buds from their plants. GAHH!!!
So let's talk about the current status of my garden.... Continue reading→
Garden update, yada yada
I just realized that it's been awhile since I updated my backyard garden progress. So what's going on with that? Parts of my garden are thriving & other parts...not so much. It's definitely been a learning process and I'm so fascinated by it all. I planted some Echinacea in the backyard and it's finally blooming! It's soo pretty! I love it.
What have I learned so far?

Let’s get growing!
Last year I started my first little garden in our backyard. You can see the progress here here and here! We had tomatoes in this trough last year, so when I read that you aren't supposed to plant tomatoes in the same place the following year I decided to make this section into an herb garden. I am pretty excited about it. I have big plans for the rest of the yard because it's totally easy for me to go overboard on this stuff. It's soo gratifying to grow your own veggies & herbs and I want to plant MORE AND MORE!
Here's an overview of what's in the trough that we got a few years ago at a Feed store in Half Moon Bay.

tonight’s loot

When I set up my tomato garden, I had visions of drowning this site with tomato porn....I had soo many recipes to test!
Reality set in and I caught myself snacking out in the garden more than bringing them in the kitchen to use in recipes. Tonight was a bit different though! I took a break from snacking for a few days and had this loot tonight!

And because I needed to make something quick and simple, I made little pizzas (with Trader Joe's Flatbreads)

The results? AMAZING.
I have never experienced that much sweetness from a tomato. The roasting of the tomatoes on that gooey mozzarella really brought out their natural sugar.

There's nothing better than cutting up tomatoes from your own garden!
Oh the visions I have for NEXT summer. I might just go a little overboard....
RIPEN RIPEN RIPEN!!!
I know a watched pot never boils.....

BUT there are a few of these Early Girls that are SOOO close to ripening. I hope that when I get home from work, I can devour one.
Cooper is pretty impatient too....
