Affogato Speciale

Affogato Speciale // shutterbean

Whenever we see an Affogato on a dessert menu, Casey and I simultaneously blurt out AFFOGATO GIVE YOU SOMETHING. It’s a silly little line we picked up from the TV show Kitchen Confidential (Bradley Cooper was in it…not Anthony Bourdain). We just can’t help ourselves!

Affogato Speciale // shutterbean

We have an espresso espresso machine, espresso beans, and a big bottle of Amaretto just hanging out in our liquor cabinet but we rarely have ice cream (cuz we eat it all) and we almost NEVER have chocolate stout at home. But when I saw this recipe I was intrigued. Chocolate stout??? And amaretto? Extra items were immediately procured. Let’s seriously elevate the affogato! What we have here is a grown up root beer float! It’s bitter. It’s sweet. It’s slightly chocolatey and super foamy because of the stout! It would be a real crowd pleaser if you’re looking to impress guests at a party. I highly suggest you say- Affogato show you this cool recipe I found on Shutterbean.

And we’re off!

I found some Chocolate Stout at Beverages & More and busted out some Disaronno. If you wanna make your own Amaretto, I have a recipe for you. It’s fun and easy. It makes for a really nice gift!

Affogato Speciale // shutterbean

Brew your espresso. You’re gonna need four shots total. This right here is two. Gotta work fast as the ice cream melts!

If you don’t have an espresso machine or espresso powder, I suggest you brew some super strong coffee.

Pour the espresso, amaretto and stout over the ice cream.

Ice cream foams. Colors swirl. It’s a gorgeous thing to watch.

These look amazing. I’ve made an Affogato before but never put any amaretto in it. Also, never seen anything like the chocolate stout around these parts. I’d better get searching!

What a strange and alluring combination, at first I was thinking “stout, really?” but the more I thought about it the more I wanted one of these!

  • My recent affogato obsession is loving this recipe!

Ice cream AND booze AND coffee — I think we have all had days where this is what our feelings would taste like.

I’ve tried beer floats before & they were good, but these look amazing! I love amaretto…I think even adding it to an espresso without the beer & ice cream would be delicious!

Excellent choice with the Samuel Smith’s chocolate stout! Great flavor!

Wow! A Bradley Cooper TV show I have not seen or heard of? Thanks for the heads up, I already scoped it out and can watch it on HULU. I love me some Bradley Cooper!! Love you blog too! Keep up the good work.

Oh wow. I had my first amaretto last weekend and I’m a long time lover of the affogato, so I can only imagine how divine these taste! I’m not sure I can drink stout because of my wheat intolerance, but I’m willing to take the risk, or maybe just add more espresso to my glass :)
Thanks for a great idea for dessert this weekend.
Afogatto tell you…I wouldn’t share those two either ;)

    Hi!

1.) I’m wondering where this Affogato has been my whole life. Yum!

2.) I really like you because you seem so great but NORMAL!!! I just discovered you via Joy the Baker (who also seems really great but normal) This is high praise– I can’t stand food/crafty blogs that appear to be run by Stepford Wives, ugh!

      1. I am so glad I can introduce you to an affogato!
      2. Ha! Normal! I think I’m normal? Well, I’m a bit of a weirdo- but aren’t we all?

  • February 19, 2014

I LOVE that glass that you put the espresso in — where did you get it from?!?!

Thanks! It’s from West Elm. It’s perfect for a little scoop of ice cream.

I am loving all the puns you are making with this recipe name! I am also loving how you didn’t share, you deserve it! Both of them!

  • February 20, 2014

Wooo, yeah!!! This is my kinda float!

  • February 22, 2014

Oh good god, these look amazing. If there’s affogato to be had at a restaurant or cafe, I always order it. But this….this! This looks amazing. I’m thinking date night: my hubby is a ridiculously huge fan of chocolate stout, and I’m an amaretto lover… I can’t wait to give this a try. Like, it’s going to be hard to sleep at night until I manage to procure some ice cream and go to the liquor store…..

  • February 23, 2014

oh yes! this is just perfect for a really hot day in my homeland! great post for a coffee lover!

  • February 23, 2014

Instead of chocolate stout (I’m GF), I think I’d just add some straight Hershey’s syrup. Yeah?

  • February 25, 2014

This looks delish. I have an idea that’s been floating around my head for a long time that involves beer and ice cream. I haven’t made it happen yet. Maybe I just try this instead?

  • February 26, 2014

God this looks so good! YUM!
